Armand Guillaumin, a member of the original Impressionist circle, captures the industrial outskirts of Paris in this work. The painting depicts the banks of the Seine at Ivry, where the encroaching urbanisation of the late nineteenth century meets the natural environment. Guillaumin focuses on the atmospheric effects of the setting sun, which casts a warm, golden glow across the sky and reflects upon the water. The composition is anchored by the dark, silhouetted forms of trees on the right and the distant factory chimneys on the horizon. These chimneys release plumes of smoke that drift across the sky, integrating the industrial activity into the natural cycle of the day.
