A bold Expressionist work by Max Pechstein, featuring a striking blue bridge set against a fiery sunset and deep violet sky.
Max Pechstein, a member of the Die Brücke group, produced this work during a period when his style moved toward a more structured form of Expressionism. The composition centres on a bridge rendered in a striking blue, which contrasts with the fiery, semi-circular sun dominating the upper portion of the canvas. The sky is a heavy, saturated wash of deep violet and indigo, suggesting the final moments of daylight.
In the foreground, a path winds toward the bridge, flanked by palm-like trees that frame the scene. Two figures walk along the path, while a small animal, possibly a goat or dog, is visible near the bottom. Pechstein employs bold, non-naturalistic colour choices to evoke an emotional response rather than a literal representation of the scene. The brushwork is energetic and direct, characteristic of the artist's approach to capturing the raw essence of his subjects. The interplay between the cool tones of the water and bridge and the warm, radiating light of the sun creates a tension that is typical of his output from this era. This print captures the specific texture of the original oil paint, preserving the heavy application and the visible marks left by the artist's brush. It offers a glimpse into the German Expressionist movement, where the subjective experience of the artist took precedence over traditional academic techniques. The work remains an example of how Pechstein used colour to define space and mood, creating a scene that feels both immediate and dreamlike.
