Fyodor Vasilyev (1850-1873) was a Russian painter known for his atmospheric depictions of the Russian countryside. Despite his short life, cut short by tuberculosis, Vasilyev produced a significant body of work that influenced later Russian artists. He is associated with the Realist movement, which sought to portray subjects with truth and accuracy. Vasilyev's seascapes are characterised by their attention to the transient effects of light and weather. 'Surf. Waves' captures the raw power of the sea. The painting depicts a large wave as it approaches the shore, its crest about to break. The colour palette is muted, dominated by greens, blues, and greys, which convey the cool, damp atmosphere of the coast.
