This series represents a shift in the Ukiyo-e tradition, moving away from depictions of courtesans and actors towards the representation of natural scenery and the daily lives of common people. The print captures a view from the Surugadai district in Edo, known for its elevated position and proximity to the residences of high-ranking samurai.

The composition is structured around the contrast between the foreground activity and the distant horizon. On the left, a steep, green embankment is populated by figures carrying loads, their forms rendered with precise, economical lines. To the right, the tiled roof of a large building frames the scene, drawing the eye towards the background. In the far distance, the peak of Mount Fuji emerges, rendered with a subtle, pale outline that balances the darker tones of the foreground architecture and foliage. The sky transitions from a deep Prussian blue at the top to a lighter hue near the horizon, a technique Hokusai utilised to create atmospheric depth.
