A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting the biblical scene of Susanna facing her accusers.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts the biblical narrative of Susanna, a story drawn from the Book of Daniel. The composition presents the moment of accusation, where Susanna stands before the two elders who have falsely charged her. De Bruyn employs a structured, theatrical arrangement, placing the seated elders on a raised dais to the left, while the central figure of Susanna is flanked by armed guards. The scene is framed by architectural elements, including circular windows that offer a glimpse of a distant, simplified horizon.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision characteristic of late sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking. De Bruyn uses a system of parallel hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures, the folds of their garments, and the depth of the interior space. The figures are rendered with a degree of stylisation typical of the period, favouring clear outlines and expressive gestures over anatomical realism. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the scene, identifying the injustice of the false accusation brought against the protagonist.
As a printmaker active in Antwerp, de Bruyn produced numerous works that circulated widely, often serving as visual aids for moral instruction or theological study. This piece reflects the period's interest in classical and biblical themes, adapted to the aesthetic sensibilities of the Northern Renaissance. The print captures the tension of the confrontation through the interaction of the figures, with the guards acting as intermediaries between the accusers and the accused. The work remains a clear example of the graphic traditions of the Low Countries, where the medium of engraving allowed for the dissemination of complex narratives to a broader audience beyond the immediate reach of large-scale paintings.
