A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts the biblical narrative of Susanna and the Elders. The scene captures the moment of confrontation, where two men approach Susanna while she bathes in a garden. De Bruyn employs a characteristic Northern Renaissance approach to the composition, balancing the figures against architectural and botanical elements. The fountain serves as a central anchor for the figures, while the palm tree and the arched structure in the background provide a sense of place.
The artist uses precise, controlled lines to define the forms and textures of the drapery, the stone fountain, and the surrounding foliage. The Latin inscription at the base, 'CIRCUNVENTA DOLIS DEXTRA LEVAQUE REPUGNANS CONSERVARE CUPIT MORTE PUDICITIAM', translates to the idea of Susanna being surrounded by deceit, resisting with both hands, and desiring to preserve her modesty even at the cost of her life. This text provides a moralising frame for the visual narrative, a common practice in sixteenth-century printmaking.
Abraham de Bruyn was a prolific engraver based in Antwerp, a major centre for print production during this period. His work often focused on religious, mythological, and costume subjects, reflecting the interests of contemporary collectors. This print demonstrates his technical proficiency in the medium of engraving, showing a clear understanding of anatomical proportion and spatial arrangement. The work is typical of the period's interest in classical and biblical themes, rendered with a focus on clarity and narrative legibility. The print is a fine example of the graphic arts in the Low Countries during the late sixteenth century, demonstrating the skill required to translate complex human drama into a monochrome medium.
