A dramatic 17th-century etching by Cornelis Schut (I) depicting the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders with expressive line work.
This etching by the Flemish artist Cornelis Schut (I) depicts the biblical narrative of Susanna and the Elders. Schut, a contemporary of Peter Paul Rubens, spent a significant period in Rome, where he absorbed the dramatic lighting and dynamic compositions characteristic of the Italian Baroque. His work often features expressive figures and a sense of immediate movement, qualities clearly present in this print.
The composition focuses on the central figure of Susanna, who is caught in a moment of distress as she is approached by the two elders. Schut employs a dense network of etched lines to create shadow and volume, particularly in the drapery and the foliage that frames the scene. The contrast between the light on Susanna and the darker, more shadowed forms of the men creates a sense of tension. The architectural elements in the background provide a sense of place, while the foreground details, such as the vessel, add a tactile quality to the composition.
Schut was a prolific draughtsman and printmaker, and his etchings demonstrate a mastery of the medium. He uses varied line weights to define form and texture, from the soft rendering of skin to the more vigorous hatching used for the trees and garments. This print is a fine example of the narrative focus common in 17th-century European art, where artists sought to capture the psychological weight of a story through gesture and expression. The work reflects the technical skill required to balance complex figures within a confined space, a hallmark of Schut's approach to printmaking.
