A detailed 17th-century engraving by Crispijn van de Passe the Elder, depicting the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders within a formal garden setting.
This engraving depicts the biblical narrative of Susanna, a virtuous woman who is accosted by two elders while bathing in her garden. The composition follows the conventions of Northern Mannerism, prioritising a clear, staged arrangement of figures within a structured architectural setting. Crispijn van de Passe the Elder, a prolific Dutch engraver and publisher, employs precise line work to define the textures of the fountain, the drapery, and the surrounding garden architecture.
The central group features Susanna, positioned at the edge of a fountain, flanked by the two men. Their gestures are theatrical, typical of the period, with the elders gesturing towards the background where other figures are visible. The background includes a formal garden with a long walkway, demonstrating the artist's interest in linear perspective and spatial depth. The inclusion of Latin text at the bottom of the print provides a moralising commentary on the scene, a common feature in prints of this era intended for a learned audience.
Van de Passe was known for his technical skill in copperplate engraving, which allowed for the fine, controlled lines seen in the shading of the figures and the architectural details. The print reflects the broader European interest in classical and biblical themes, often interpreted through the lens of contemporary fashion and architectural styles. The work is an example of the print culture that circulated across Europe during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, disseminating artistic motifs and moral narratives to a wider public. The clarity of the engraving ensures that the narrative remains the primary focus, while the surrounding elements provide a sense of place and atmosphere.
