A 1517 oil painting by Lorenzo Lotto depicting the biblical scene of Susanna and the Elders with characteristic Renaissance theatricality.
Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the High Renaissance, completed this work in 1517. The painting depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Daniel, in which Susanna is surprised while bathing by two elders who attempt to coerce her. Lotto presents the scene with a distinct sense of theatricality, placing the figures within a walled garden setting that creates a claustrophobic atmosphere.
Susanna occupies the lower left, her posture conveying distress as she attempts to cover herself. The two elders, dressed in contemporary sixteenth-century attire, dominate the right side of the composition. Their gestures are exaggerated, and they hold scrolls inscribed with text, a device that adds a didactic layer to the visual storytelling. The background features a structured garden and architectural elements, which provide a sense of depth and scale, contrasting with the immediate tension of the foreground encounter.
Lotto is known for his psychological insight and his departure from the balanced, harmonious compositions typical of his contemporaries. In this work, the lighting is clear and even, allowing for the precise rendering of fabrics and the varied expressions of the figures. The inclusion of the scrolls is a specific stylistic choice that directs the viewer to the moral conflict at the centre of the narrative. This painting remains a clear example of Lotto's ability to integrate complex human emotion into traditional religious subjects, moving away from the idealised forms often seen in the work of his peers. The clarity of the forms and the deliberate arrangement of the figures demonstrate his technical precision and his interest in the dramatic potential of the human figure within a narrative space.
