Suvorov himself appears on the left, mounted on a white horse, gesturing forward to encourage his troops. The artist employed a steep, diagonal composition to convey the sheer verticality of the terrain. The palette is dominated by cold blues, greys, and whites, which effectively communicate the freezing conditions of the high-altitude environment. Surikov was known for his meticulous research into historical subjects, and here he pays close attention to the uniforms and equipment of the late 18th-century Russian army. Unlike traditional heroic depictions of military leaders, this work emphasises the physical struggle of the common soldier.
