Description
A dramatic historical painting by Vasily Surikov depicting Russian soldiers descending a steep, snow-covered mountain pass during the 1799 Alpine campaign.
Vasily Surikov completed this large-scale historical composition in 1899, depicting the arduous 1799 military campaign of Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov. The painting captures the moment Russian soldiers descend a steep, snow-covered mountain pass in the Swiss Alps. Surikov focuses on the collective experience of the infantry, showing men sliding down the precipice with a mixture of trepidation and grim determination. Suvorov himself appears on the left, mounted on a white horse, gesturing forward to encourage his troops. The artist employed a steep, diagonal composition to convey the sheer verticality of the terrain. The palette is dominated by cold blues, greys, and whites, which effectively communicate the freezing conditions of the high-altitude environment. Surikov was known for his meticulous research into historical subjects, and here he pays close attention to the uniforms and equipment of the late 18th-century Russian army. Unlike traditional heroic depictions of military leaders, this work emphasises the physical struggle of the common soldier. The faces of the men are individualised, showing a range of emotions from anxiety to stoic resolve. The painting is part of the collection at the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg and remains one of the most recognised examples of Russian historical realism. Surikov used his own experiences of the Siberian landscape to inform the texture of the snow and the harsh quality of the mountain light, creating a sense of immediacy that brings the historical event into a tangible, human scale.
