A tender portrait of a mother and child, rendered in the soft, textured style of Belgian artist Firmin Baes.
Firmin Baes, a Belgian artist known for his technical mastery of pastel, produced this intimate study of maternal affection. The work captures a mother cradling her sleeping infant, a subject that allowed Baes to demonstrate his command over soft textures and light. The mother wears a simple bonnet and a loose, rose-coloured garment, while the child is wrapped in white linen.
Baes favoured pastel as his primary medium, often applying it with a precision that mimics the appearance of oil paint. His technique involves layering pigments to create a smooth, almost velvety surface. This approach is evident in the rendering of the fabric folds and the subtle transitions of tone across the skin of both figures. The composition is tightly cropped, focusing entirely on the interaction between the two subjects. By removing extraneous background details, Baes directs the viewer to the quiet, domestic nature of the scene.
Throughout his career, Baes remained committed to traditional representational methods, often depicting scenes from everyday life in his native Belgium. His work avoids the stylistic shifts of the early twentieth century, preferring a calm, observational approach. The soft lighting in this piece suggests a gentle, indoor environment, contributing to the overall sense of stillness. The artist's signature is visible in the lower right corner, applied with the same careful attention found throughout the rest of the image. This print reproduces the delicate tonal variations of the original pastel, maintaining the soft edges and muted colour palette that define the work.
