This illustration by Walter Crane depicts the Greek god Pan playing his pipes in a reedy, floral setting. The soft colour palette and decorative details evoke a sense of pastoral fantasy.
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was an English artist and book illustrator. He is considered one of the most influential children's book creators of his generation, alongside Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. Crane was a proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement and a socialist, designing numerous posters and illustrations for socialist causes. 'Sweet, piercing sweet was the music of Pan's pipe' depicts the Greek god Pan playing his pipes in a reedy, floral setting. The illustration shows Pan, half-man and half-goat, seated and playing his pipes. A nymph-like figure stands behind him, partially obscured by the tall reeds. The composition is framed by the vertical lines of the reeds, creating a sense of enclosure and intimacy. The colour palette is soft and muted, with greens, browns, and yellows predominating. The style is typical of Crane's work, with its emphasis on decorative detail and flat planes of colour. The image evokes a sense of pastoral fantasy and classical mythology.
