A seminal work of Synchromism, this abstract painting uses rhythmic geometric planes and saturated colour to create a visual experience akin to music.
Synchromy in Orange: To Form is a primary example of the Synchromist movement, which Morgan Russell co-founded with Stanton Macdonald-Wright in Paris. The work rejects representational subject matter in favour of pure colour and form. Russell believed that colour possessed the same structural potential as music, aiming to create a visual experience analogous to a symphony.
The composition consists of geometric planes and angular shapes that radiate from a central axis. These segments are filled with saturated hues, including deep blues, bright yellows, and fiery oranges. The arrangement of these colours creates a sense of rhythmic movement across the canvas. By layering these shapes, Russell suggests a three-dimensional volume without relying on traditional perspective or figurative imagery. The border of the painting features a rhythmic sequence of coloured squares, which frames the central explosion of form and reinforces the systematic approach to colour theory employed by the artist.
This piece reflects the early twentieth-century fascination with the relationship between colour and emotional response. Russell utilised the properties of the colour spectrum to build a structure that feels both solid and kinetic. The application of paint is deliberate, with each plane defined by its specific hue and value. By stripping away external references, the artist focuses the viewer on the interaction of light and pigment. This work remains a clear demonstration of the Synchromist ambition to elevate painting to the status of abstract musical composition, where the arrangement of colour serves as the primary language of expression.
