This fresco fragment depicts the Virgin Mary during the Annunciation, part of a larger work by Benozzo Gozzoli (1421-1497), an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. Gozzoli was a student of Fra Angelico, and his style reflects the influence of his teacher, particularly in the use of bright colours and detailed figures. He is best known for his fresco cycles, notably the Chapel of the Magi in the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, Florence. The fragment shows Mary standing within an architectural setting, rendered in soft, muted tones. She is draped in a golden robe with pale blue lining, her gaze lowered in contemplation as she holds a book. Above her, a dove, symbolising the Holy Spirit, descends. The archway surrounding the scene is decorated with floral motifs, adding a decorative element to the composition. The fresco's delicate lines and gentle colour palette are characteristic of Gozzoli's style, which aimed to create a sense of serenity and devotion.
