A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Eishōsai Chōki depicting the courtesan Takao in a moment of quiet contemplation.
This woodblock print by Eishōsai Chōki depicts a courtesan, identified as Takao, in a moment of quiet preparation. The artist, active during the late eighteenth century, is known for his refined depictions of women, often characterised by elongated figures and a sense of melancholy. In this composition, the subject is shown seated, adjusting her hairpins while a small smoking set rests before her. The lines are fluid and precise, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, which prioritised clear contours and flat areas of colour.
The print features a muted palette, relying on soft greens and earthy tones to create a sense of calm. The subject wears a kimono adorned with a subtle geometric pattern, which provides a rhythmic quality to the lower half of the composition. A cartouche in the upper right corner contains Japanese calligraphy, a common feature in prints of this period that often provided context or poetic commentary on the subject. The figure occupies the majority of the space, with the background left largely empty to focus the viewer's attention on the posture and expression of the woman.
Eishōsai Chōki worked within the broader context of the floating world, or Ukiyo, which celebrated the ephemeral pleasures of urban life in Edo-period Japan. His work often deviates from the more idealised portraits of his contemporaries, opting instead for a more individualised approach to his subjects. This print is an example of the technical skill involved in the production of Japanese woodblock prints, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in works of great clarity. The composition is balanced, using the diagonal of the figure to guide the eye across the page, while the simplicity of the setting allows the viewer to observe the subject without distraction.
