A six-panel folding screen featuring narrative scenes from the Tale of Genji, rendered in the traditional Tosa school style with gold leaf and ink.
This six-panel folding screen, or byobu, depicts scenes from the Tale of Genji, a classic work of Japanese literature attributed to Murasaki Shikibu. The composition employs the shikishi-gata technique, where individual narrative vignettes are framed within a grid of gold leaf squares. This arrangement creates a rhythmic visual structure, balancing the decorative quality of the gold ground with the precise, miniature-scale illustrations of courtly life.
The Tosa school, to which Mitsushige belonged, maintained a long tradition of Yamato-e painting. This style is characterised by its focus on Japanese subjects, refined line work, and a specific approach to perspective known as fukinuki-yatai, or blown-off roof, which allows the viewer to observe interior scenes from an elevated angle. The figures are rendered with delicate features and elaborate robes, reflecting the aesthetic values of the Heian period, even though the screen itself dates to the Muromachi or early Momoyama era.
The use of gold leaf across the surface serves to unify the disparate narrative moments, providing a luminous backdrop that contrasts with the muted, earthy tones of the painted figures and architecture. The grid pattern, interspersed with diagonal lines, adds a geometric rigour to the composition. This screen functions as both a narrative device and a decorative object, designed to be viewed in a domestic setting where the play of light on the gold surface would shift throughout the day. The inclusion of calligraphy within the grid further integrates the literary source material into the visual design, creating a synthesis of text and image that is central to the Japanese artistic tradition.
