A haunting monochromatic illustration by Mikhail Vrubel, depicting the character Tamara from Lermontov's poem, The Demon, in a state of solemn repose.
This work depicts the character Tamara from Mikhail Lermontov's poem, The Demon. Vrubel produced this illustration during his time in Kyiv, where he was heavily engaged with the themes of the poem. The composition captures the protagonist in a state of repose, surrounded by the trappings of her funeral.
The artist employs a monochromatic palette, utilising washes of grey and white to create a sense of ethereal stillness. The figure of Tamara is rendered with delicate attention to the textures of her burial shroud and the ornamentation of her headpiece. Two tall candles frame the scene, their verticality providing a stark contrast to the horizontal orientation of the figure. The application of white gouache adds a luminous quality to the surface, suggesting the flickering light of the candles against the gloom of the chamber.
Vrubel's approach to this subject reflects his interest in the intersection of literary narrative and visual expression. The handling of the medium demonstrates his technical facility, particularly in the way he balances the soft, blurred edges of the background with the more defined features of the face. This piece is a representative example of his work on the Lermontov cycle, which occupied his attention for several years. The focus remains on the psychological weight of the scene, achieved through the interplay of shadow and light rather than through overt narrative detail. The work is held in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
