A traditional ink-wash painting by Ming Dynasty artist Du Jin, depicting the poet Tao Yuanming in a contemplative moment among pine trees and chrysanthemums.
This hanging scroll depicts the poet Tao Yuanming, a figure celebrated in Chinese history for his decision to abandon a government career in favour of a secluded life in nature. Du Jin, an artist active during the Ming Dynasty, employs a refined ink-wash technique to capture the scholar in a moment of quiet contemplation. The composition is dominated by a gnarled pine tree, which serves as a traditional symbol of longevity and moral integrity. Tao Yuanming stands near the base of the tree, his posture relaxed as he observes the chrysanthemums, flowers long associated with his persona and his preference for a simple, reclusive existence.
The brushwork demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Du Jin's approach to figure and nature studies. The artist uses varied line weights to define the texture of the pine bark and the flowing robes of the scholar. The negative space in the upper portion of the scroll provides a sense of atmospheric depth, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the human subject and his natural surroundings. Calligraphic inscriptions at the top of the work provide context, linking the visual imagery to the literary tradition surrounding Tao Yuanming.
Du Jin was known for his ability to integrate figure painting with traditional mountain-and-water themes. This work reflects the values of the scholar-official class, who often looked to historical figures like Tao Yuanming as models for personal conduct. By focusing on the act of viewing flowers, the artist creates a scene that is both narrative and meditative. The muted palette, consisting primarily of ink tones on aged paper, maintains the focus on the form and the symbolic weight of the elements depicted. This print offers a clear view of the brushwork and the subtle tonal shifts that define the original composition.
