Description
Tarr Steps in Somerset crosses a reflective river on broad stone slabs, with orange autumn branches, sunlit water and a pale farmhouse above a green bank in the wooded valley.
Tarr Steps spans the River Barle in Exmoor National Park. Built entirely from stone slabs and boulders, its seventeen spans make it Britain’s longest surviving clapper bridge. First recorded in Tudor times, the crossing has repeatedly been repaired after floods displaced its heavy stones.
The flat grey slabs run diagonally from the near left bank towards the opposite shore, resting just above blue-green water. Moss colours their supporting rocks, and small ripples interrupt the reflections. Orange leaves spread across the upper left around dark branching trunks. Beyond the bridge, a pale farmhouse and green slope catch bright autumn sunshine.
