Gaspare Traversi, a name perhaps less familiar than his Venetian contemporaries Canaletto or Guardi, offers a refreshingly different glimpse into 18th-century Italy. Born in Naples in 1722, Traversi eschewed the Grand Tour vistas and aristocratic portraits favoured by many, instead focusing on the burgeoning middle class and their often-chaotic domestic lives. He captured scenes of everyday life with a theatrical flair, earning him the moniker 'the Neapolitan Hogarth'. Traversi's paintings are characterised by their dramatic lighting, vivid colours, and a keen eye for detail. He wasn't afraid to depict the less savoury aspects of society – gambling, infidelity, and social climbing are all common themes. Works such as 'The Concert' and 'The Family Concert' showcase his ability to create engaging narratives within a single frame, inviting the viewer to become a voyeur in these intimate moments. Though his career was relatively short, ending with his death in 1770, Gaspare Traversi left behind a fascinating body of work. He provides a valuable counterpoint to the more idealised views of the era. His paintings offer a unique and often humorous perspective on the lives of ordinary people, making him a compelling and relevant artist for modern audiences.
