Description

A dramatic oil painting by Henry Fuseli depicting the mythological encounter between Odysseus and the prophet Teiresias in the underworld.

Henry Fuseli, a Swiss-born painter active in London, frequently turned to classical literature for his subject matter. This work depicts a scene from Homer's Odyssey, specifically the moment Odysseus descends into the underworld to consult the blind prophet Teiresias. The composition is defined by the dramatic tension between the living hero and the spectral figures of the dead.

Fuseli employs a stark, theatrical lighting scheme that is characteristic of his approach to narrative painting. Odysseus, positioned in the foreground, is rendered with muscular, anatomical precision, clutching a sword as he interacts with the ethereal, elongated forms of the spirits. Teiresias stands tall and imposing, draped in dark robes that contrast with the pale, ghostly figures emerging from the gloom behind him. The artist uses a limited, moody palette to heighten the sense of mystery and the supernatural atmosphere of the underworld.

This painting demonstrates Fuseli's interest in the psychological weight of mythological encounters. Rather than focusing on the physical environment, he prioritises the emotional state of the characters. The figures are arranged to guide the viewer's eye through the narrative, from the grounded, active posture of Odysseus to the looming, authoritative presence of the prophet. The work reflects the broader European interest in the sublime and the gothic during the late eighteenth century, where artists sought to evoke awe and unease through their depictions of ancient myths. Fuseli's handling of form and shadow creates a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the narrative space, making the interaction between the mortal and the immortal feel immediate and unsettling.

Artist Biography

Henry Fuseli

Fuseli reportedly ate raw pork chops before bed to induce nightmares for painting inspiration. The story may be apocryphal, but The Nightmare (1781), which shows a woman draped unconscious over a bed with an incubus squatting on her chest and a horse's head emerging from the darkness, suggests the method, if it existed, worked.

He was born Johann Heinrich Fussli in Zurich in 1741, the second of eighteen children. He was ordained as a minister in 1761 but forced to leave Switzerland after helping expose a corrupt magistrate. He spent eight years in Rome, changed his name from Fussli to the Italianate Fuseli, and arrived in London with a taste for the violent, the erotic, and the supernatural.

William Blake, not easily impressed, said of him: the only man that e'er I knew who did not make me almost spew. This was a compliment. Blake meant Fuseli was the only person who did not disgust him. Their friendship lasted decades. Fuseli married his model Sophia Rawlins in 1788. He became Keeper of the Royal Academy and grew increasingly conservative in his politics despite having started as a radical. He died in 1825, aged eighty-four, and was buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
