Reinjan Mulder, a Dutch writer and visual artist, produced this work in 1980. It represents a conceptual approach to cartography, stripping the geography of the Netherlands down to its most basic geometric components. By utilising standard graph paper, Mulder imposes a rigid, mathematical structure upon the organic shape of the country. The resulting image is a series of squares that approximate the national borders, creating a pixelated or schematic version of the Dutch territory.
The work functions as a critique of how we perceive and measure space. Rather than providing a realistic depiction, Mulder focuses on the abstraction of land into data points. The diagonal lines crossing the grid add a layer of technical precision, suggesting the tools of an architect or surveyor. This reductionist method removes the typical markers of a map, such as cities, rivers, or roads, leaving only the outline defined by the grid squares.
