This hanging scroll depicts Sugawara no Michizane, the historical scholar and poet deified as Tenjin, the patron of learning. The artist, Tōsai, presents the figure in a traditional standing pose, dressed in the formal robes of a high-ranking court official. He holds a sprig of plum blossoms, a motif closely associated with the legend of Tenjin, who famously composed poetry about the plum tree before his exile. The figure is rendered with precise, controlled ink lines that define the folds of his garments and the contours of his face, reflecting the stylistic conventions of Muromachi period religious portraiture.
The composition is balanced and vertical, typical of the hanging scroll format. Above the figure, a calligraphic inscription provides context and reverence, linking the visual representation to the literary traditions surrounding the deity. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and subtle ink washes, creates a sense of solemnity and age.
