A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting fishermen at Teppozu, capturing the coastal atmosphere of Edo-period Japan.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts the Teppozu area of Edo, present-day Tokyo. It belongs to the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital, a collection that captures various sites across the city during the Edo period. The composition focuses on two fishermen perched upon rocks in the foreground, their figures rendered with characteristic attention to posture and traditional attire. One man holds a long fishing rod, while the other leans forward, creating a sense of quiet activity against the expansive water.
To the left, a boat with a large, open umbrella rests on the water, adding a geometric element to the scene. The background features a simplified horizon line, with the silhouettes of distant ships visible across the bay. Kuniyoshi employs a restrained colour palette, relying on shades of blue for the water and sky, which provides a sense of atmospheric depth. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance human subjects with the surrounding environment, a common theme in his landscape work. The use of bokashi, or colour gradation, is evident in the sky, transitioning from a deeper tone at the top to a lighter hue near the horizon.
Kuniyoshi was a member of the Utagawa school and is known for his diverse output, ranging from warrior prints to satirical subjects. This work reflects the interest in travel and local geography that became popular among the urban population of Edo. The print serves as a record of the coastal character of the city before the extensive land reclamation projects of later centuries. The inclusion of the series title and the artist's signature in the cartouches provides clear identification of its origin within the print culture of the 1830s.
