Description

A fine art print of Antonio Canova's 1811 Neoclassical marble sculpture, depicting Terpsichore, the Muse of lyric poetry, leaning against her lyre.

Antonio Canova, the pre-eminent sculptor of the Neoclassical period, completed this marble figure of Terpsichore, the Muse of lyric poetry and dance, in 1811. Commissioned by Count Sommariva, the work reflects the artist's dedication to the aesthetic principles of antiquity, prioritising clarity, balance, and a refined surface finish. The figure stands in a contrapposto stance, leaning gently against a square plinth that supports her lyre. Her weight rests primarily on her right leg, while her left knee bends, creating a subtle S-curve through the torso. Canova demonstrates his technical mastery through the treatment of the drapery. The fabric clings to the body in thin, fluid folds, revealing the form beneath while maintaining a sense of modesty and grace. The Muse's hair is arranged in an elaborate coiffure, adorned with small floral elements, which contrasts with the smooth, polished texture of the skin. Her expression is serene, with a downward gaze that suggests internal contemplation rather than active performance. The lyre, a traditional attribute of the Muse, is rendered with precision, featuring decorative motifs that echo the classical inspiration of the piece. The composition is self-contained, designed to be viewed from multiple angles, though the frontal perspective provides the most complete understanding of the figure's posture and the interplay between the human form and the supporting plinth. Canova's ability to transform cold, hard marble into a representation of soft flesh and delicate fabric remains a defining characteristic of his output. This print captures the tonal variations of the stone, allowing for an appreciation of the sculptural volume and the play of light across the curved surfaces of the figure.
