An eighteenth-century allegorical engraving by Charles Dupuis depicting the Earth as a fertile, lion-drawn chariot surrounded by figures of abundance.
This engraving, titled Terra (Earth), is a work by the French printmaker Charles Dupuis, completed in 1731. It forms part of a series depicting the four elements, a common subject in European art during the eighteenth century. The composition centres on a female figure representing the Earth, seated in a chariot drawn by lions, which symbolise the raw power and fertility of the soil. She is surrounded by attendants and putti, who carry baskets of fruit and flowers, signifying the abundance provided by the land. The scene is set within a pastoral environment, featuring trees and distant hills that frame the central action. To the left, figures in classical attire engage in agricultural or gathering activities, reinforcing the theme of human interaction with the natural world. The print includes Latin and French inscriptions at the base, which offer a moralising commentary on the relationship between humanity and the earth, specifically noting the human tendency towards greed and the extraction of mineral wealth from the ground. Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of the engraving medium. Dupuis employs varied line weights to define the musculature of the figures, the texture of the lions' manes, and the foliage of the surrounding trees. The shading creates a sense of volume and depth, typical of the period's preference for balanced, theatrical arrangements. The inclusion of putti floating above the chariot adds a layer of mythological grace to the scene, connecting the terrestrial subject matter to the celestial realm. This print provides a clear example of the allegorical tradition, where complex philosophical concepts are translated into readable visual narratives through classical iconography and careful draughtsmanship.
