A precise seventeenth-century drawing by Remigio Cantagallina, featuring a serene canal view rendered in pen and brown ink with wash.
Remigio Cantagallina, a Florentine draughtsman and printmaker, is recognised for his precise topographical studies and views of the Italian countryside. This work displays his characteristic approach to pen and ink, utilising delicate line work combined with soft brown washes to define spatial depth. The composition is structured around a stone terrace in the foreground, where a solitary figure sits, observing the waterway below.
The scene features a conical-roofed structure to the left, balanced by the verticality of trees that frame the view. Cantagallina employs a clear, measured perspective, guiding the eye from the immediate architectural elements toward the distant, receding canal. The use of wash creates subtle transitions in tone, suggesting the play of light across the foliage and the water surface. His technique reflects the period interest in documenting both natural and man-made environments with clarity and order.
Cantagallina was a contemporary of Jacques Callot, and his work shares a similar attention to detail in the depiction of figures and architectural forms. This drawing provides a window into the aesthetic priorities of the early seventeenth century, where the observation of nature was often filtered through a desire for balanced, harmonious composition. The inclusion of the small boat on the canal adds a sense of scale and human presence to the quiet, rural setting. This fine art print captures the original nuances of the ink and wash, preserving the texture of the paper and the fluidity of the artist's hand. It is a study in calm observation, suitable for those who appreciate the technical discipline of early modern European drawing.
