Description
Thaxted in Essex keeps a landmark from its milling past, where John Webb’s brick windmill rises near the church spire above open grass and the town’s old roofs.
Built in 1804 for a local farmer and businessman, John Webb’s Mill at Thaxted is a Grade II* listed brick tower mill. The Essex landmark is the town’s last surviving windmill, preserving a substantial reminder of the machinery once used to supply flour.
The red-brown tower fills the foreground, with small windows set into its tapering wall. White machinery and a narrow gallery rise above the top, while a broad timber platform circles the lower section. Farther left, a slender church spire appears beyond a pale house. Bright green grass and crisp white cloud give the scene the clear light of summer.
