A 1926 woodcut by M.C. Escher depicting the biblical creation narrative with stylised figures and animals in high-contrast black and white.
Created in 1926, this woodcut by M.C. Escher depicts the biblical narrative of the sixth day of creation. The composition features Adam and Eve standing in the foreground, their backs to the viewer, observing a central palm tree laden with fruit. Surrounding them are various animals, including a goat, a rabbit, a cat, and a deer, all rendered in Escher's characteristic high-contrast style. The background shows a simplified, rolling terrain under a sky filled with stippled clouds.
Escher employs a stark black and white palette, using the woodcut medium to define forms through clean lines and dense cross-hatching. The palm tree serves as the central axis of the image, with its fronds radiating outwards to create a canopy that frames the figures. The animals are distributed across the lower portion of the print, providing a sense of scale and narrative depth. The artist includes the reference 'GEN: 24-31' in the lower left corner, directly linking the visual work to the text of Genesis.
This piece predates the artist's later focus on mathematical tessellations and impossible geometry. It demonstrates his early interest in graphic clarity and the use of woodcut techniques to explore mythological and religious themes. The figures of Adam and Eve are depicted with a degree of stylisation that avoids anatomical realism, favouring instead a symbolic representation of humanity within the natural world. The work reflects the influence of early twentieth-century graphic arts, where the economy of line and the balance between positive and negative space were primary concerns for printmakers. The print remains a clear example of Escher's technical proficiency in wood engraving during his formative years in Italy.
