A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Shunkōsai Hokushū, capturing the actor Arashi Koroku IV in a dramatic kabuki role.
This woodblock print by Shunkōsai Hokushū depicts the kabuki actor Arashi Koroku IV in the role of the female bandit Hotei Oichi. The work originates from the Kamigata region, specifically Osaka, where the style of actor portraiture differed from the Edo tradition. Hokushū was a prominent figure in this school, known for his ability to capture the specific features and expressions of performers on the stage.
The composition follows the yakusha-e tradition, focusing on the actor's posture and costume. Arashi Koroku IV is shown in a dark blue kimono with a distinctive patterned hem, holding a folded fan. The inclusion of calligraphic text, which provides context regarding the performance and the actor's career, is a standard element of the genre. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Osaka school, with clean lines and a controlled colour palette that emphasises the actor's presence rather than background detail.
As a record of a specific theatrical event, the print serves as a document of the kabuki culture of the early nineteenth century. The figure is rendered with a sense of theatrical gravity, reflecting the performer's status during his final farewell performance. The use of flat colour planes and bold outlines is characteristic of the woodblock medium, where the artist worked in collaboration with carvers and printers to produce multiple impressions. This print provides a clear view of the aesthetic priorities of the period, where the focus remained on the individual performer and the stylised nature of the kabuki stage.
