A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Tsunegawa Shigenobu, depicting the kabuki actor Arashi Otohachi in a traditional role.
This woodblock print by Tsunegawa Shigenobu depicts the kabuki actor Arashi Otohachi. Shigenobu was a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e school, active during the mid-Edo period. His work often focused on the theatrical culture of the time, specifically the yakusha-e genre, which documented popular actors in their stage roles.
The composition presents the actor in a standing pose, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and carrying a lantern. The figure is rendered with the characteristic line work of the period, emphasising the stylised features of the actor. The kimono displays a mix of geometric patterns and floral motifs, demonstrating the attention to textile detail common in Japanese prints of this era. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochre, muted red, and black ink to define the form and costume.
Shigenobu was a follower of the Kaigetsudō school, which is evident in the bold, confident outlines and the monumental quality of the figure. The print captures the essence of the kabuki performance, where the actor's costume and accessories were as important as the dramatic gesture. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper right corner provides context, identifying the subject and his role within the theatrical tradition. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of 18th-century Japan, where the transient nature of the floating world was captured through the medium of woodblock printing. The work is a representative example of the period's focus on celebrity culture and the visual language of the theatre.
