This woodblock print by Nishikawa Yoshinobu depicts the kabuki actor Arashi Wakano in the role of a wakashu, or adolescent youth. The figure wears a dark, patterned kappa, a traditional raincoat, and holds an open umbrella above his head. The composition is characteristic of early eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e, focusing on the stylised representation of theatrical figures. Yoshinobu, an artist active in Kyoto, produced works that often documented the popular culture of the period, including the fashions and personalities of the kabuki stage.
The print displays the aesthetic conventions of the era, with a focus on linear clarity and flat colour application. The actor is shown in a graceful, slightly curved posture, a common pose for portraying youthful characters in the theatre.
