A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Shunkōsai Hokushū, capturing the kabuki actor Asao Gakujūrō I in a dramatic theatrical role.
This woodblock print by Shunkōsai Hokushū depicts the kabuki actor Asao Gakujūrō I in the role of Mashiba Hisatsugu. Hokushū was a prominent figure in the Osaka school of printmakers, known for his focus on the theatrical world of the Kamigata region. Unlike the more stylised portraits produced in Edo, Osaka prints often captured the specific features and expressions of actors with a degree of realism.
The composition is a close-up portrait, or okubi-e, which allows the viewer to observe the actor's facial expression and the details of his costume. The actor is shown in a dramatic pose, holding a sword, which is a common element in kabuki theatre to signify a character's status or intent. The background features a subtle pattern of gourds and leaves, providing a decorative element that does not distract from the central figure. The use of line is precise, defining the contours of the face and the folds of the kimono with clarity.
Textual elements, including the actor's name and poetic inscriptions, are integrated into the composition. These inscriptions were common in ukiyo-e prints, providing context about the performance or the actor's career. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones that have aged over time, typical of early nineteenth-century Japanese prints. This work provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the Edo period, where theatre and printmaking were closely linked. The print is a representative example of the yakusha-e genre, which documented the popular actors of the day for an enthusiastic public. The technical execution reflects the collaborative process between the artist, the carver, and the printer, all of whom were essential to the production of high-quality woodblock prints.
