A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro II, featuring the iconic Ichikawa family crest.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu depicts the celebrated kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro II. Shigenobu, who was a pupil of the influential artist Nishimura Shigenaga, produced works during the mid-Edo period. The print captures the actor in a characteristic pose, reflecting the dramatic style of the kabuki theatre during the eighteenth century.
The composition employs the bold, graphic lines typical of early Ukiyo-e prints. The actor is dressed in a kimono featuring the distinctive Ichikawa family crest, known as the mimasu, which consists of three nested squares. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of ochre, muted red, and black ink against a paper background. The figure stands before a series of stacked boxes, a common compositional device in actor prints of this era to suggest a theatrical setting or a backstage environment.
Shigenobu focuses on the actor's facial expression and posture, which convey the intensity of the aragoto, or rough style, of acting for which the Ichikawa line was known. The calligraphic text integrated into the composition provides identification of the subject and the artist. The print demonstrates the technical approach of the period, where the artist worked closely with the woodblock carver to translate brushwork into the final printed image. This work provides a record of the visual culture surrounding the kabuki stage, documenting the appearance and status of performers who were the celebrities of their time. The print remains a representative example of the actor portrait genre, which formed a large portion of the output for Ukiyo-e artists throughout the eighteenth century.
