A classic yakusha-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō, capturing the actor Ichikawa Monnosuke III in a dramatic 1783 kabuki performance.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Monnosuke III in the role of the sumo wrestler Shirafuji Genta. The performance occurred at the Nakamura Theater in Edo during the third month of 1783, within the play Edo no Hana Mimasu Soga. Shunjō, a member of the Katsukawa school, focused his practice on yakusha-e, or actor prints, which captured the likenesses and dramatic personas of performers during the Edo period.
The composition follows the conventions of the Katsukawa style, which moved away from the idealised, generic faces of earlier ukiyo-e artists. Instead, Shunjō provides a recognisable portrait of the actor, emphasising specific facial features and a distinct posture. The figure is shown in a moment of dramatic tension, with the actor's gaze directed away from the viewer. His costume, featuring a patterned kimono with maple leaf motifs, is rendered with precise line work. The muted colour palette relies on subtle tones of ochre, grey, and soft brown, allowing the focus to remain on the actor's expression and the silhouette of his stance.
Prints of this nature functioned as promotional material for the theatre, often collected by fans as souvenirs of specific performances. The artist's signature appears on the right side of the print, accompanied by the seal of the publisher. This work provides a glimpse into the theatrical culture of eighteenth-century Japan, where the boundaries between the sumo ring and the kabuki stage frequently overlapped in popular entertainment. The print maintains a balance between the graphic clarity of the woodblock medium and the fluid movement of the actor's robes, demonstrating the technical proficiency of the Katsukawa school in documenting the ephemeral nature of the stage.
