Utagawa Toyokuni I
A classic yakusha-e woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I, capturing the actor Ichikawa Yaozo III in a dramatic kabuki role.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Yaozo III in the role of the character Fuwa Banzaemon. The work originates from the play Ukiyozuka hiyoku no inazuma, which was performed in Edo during the late eighteenth century. Toyokuni I was a master of the yakusha-e genre, which focused on portraits of actors in their stage roles. His approach to these subjects moved away from the idealised, uniform faces seen in earlier prints, opting instead for a more individualised representation of the actor's features and expressions. The composition centres on the figure of Banzaemon, who stands in a characteristic pose. His kimono features a bold, graphic pattern of stylised clouds and lightning bolts, which provides a strong visual contrast against the plain background. The artist uses a controlled line to define the folds of the fabric and the actor's posture. The inclusion of the sword and the fan indicates the character's status and his readiness for the dramatic action typical of kabuki theatre. The colour palette is restrained, relying on black, red, and subtle earth tones to maintain focus on the actor's presence. Toyokuni I was a central figure in the Utagawa school, and his work influenced many subsequent artists who specialised in theatrical portraiture. This print demonstrates his ability to capture the intensity of a stage performance within the constraints of the woodblock medium. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition reflect the technical standards of the period. Collectors of Japanese prints value such works for their historical documentation of the kabuki stage and their contribution to the development of portraiture in the Edo period.
