A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyotsune, depicting the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō IV in the role of the Cherry Princess.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyotsune depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō IV in the role of Sakura Hime, or the Cherry Princess. The Torii school held a long association with the kabuki theatre, often producing promotional materials and actor portraits that captured the aesthetic of the Edo period stage.
The composition follows the conventions of yakusha-e, or actor prints, which were produced to document specific performances or to serve as souvenirs for theatre patrons. The figure stands in a graceful pose, holding a small incense burner from which a thin wisp of smoke rises. The actor wears a kimono decorated with cherry blossom motifs, which align with the character's name and the flowering branches depicted in the upper portion of the print.
The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted greys, and pale pinks. This choice of colour reflects the printing techniques of the era, where pigments were applied to paper with precision to create subtle tonal shifts. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the contours of the robes and the delicate features of the actor.
Kiyotsune employs a flat perspective, typical of the Ukiyo-e style, which prioritises the decorative arrangement of the figure against a neutral background. The inclusion of calligraphy to the left of the figure identifies the actor and the role, providing context for the viewer. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of eighteenth-century Japan, where the boundaries between theatre, fashion, and fine art were fluid. The work remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in traditional woodblock printing, where every line and colour block required careful registration to achieve the final image.
