A striking 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the actor Matsumoto Koshirō IV with characteristic psychological intensity.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Matsumoto Koshirō IV in the role of Gorobē. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief, ten-month period during which the artist was active. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised portraits common in the ukiyo-e tradition of the Edo period. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that emphasised the specific physical traits and psychological intensity of his subjects.
The composition focuses on the upper body of the actor, who is shown in profile. He holds a pipe, a detail that adds a sense of naturalism to the theatrical portrayal. The background is finished with a mica dusting, a technique that creates a metallic, reflective surface. This choice of material elevates the print, providing a stark contrast to the bold, simplified lines of the figure. The actor's expression is rendered with sharp, angular features, capturing a moment of dramatic tension characteristic of the kabuki stage.
Sharaku's work was often met with mixed reactions during his time, as his unflinching approach to portraiture differed from the popular aesthetic of the era. However, his prints remain significant for their graphic power and their ability to convey the personality of the performer. This print is a fine example of the artist's ability to balance the decorative requirements of the woodblock medium with a keen observation of human character. The use of limited colour, combined with the textured background, creates a visual weight that draws the eye directly to the actor's face and posture. As a piece of historical documentation, it provides insight into the performance styles and fashion of late 18th-century Japanese theatre.
