A striking ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada, featuring the kabuki actor Nakamura Fukusuke I as the legendary figure Asahina Tōbei.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Fukusuke I in the role of Asahina Tōbei. The composition belongs to the series A Modern Water Margin, which draws parallels between contemporary kabuki performers and the legendary figures from the Chinese classic novel, The Water Margin. In this specific work, the actor is likened to the character Lu Zhishen, known as the Tattooed Priest.
Kunisada employs the bold visual language characteristic of late Edo period ukiyo-e. The figure occupies the foreground, his upper body exposed to reveal elaborate floral tattoos that cover his shoulders and chest. These patterns contrast with the stylised waves on his garment and the dark, atmospheric pine branches visible in the background. The actor's expression is one of intense focus, rendered with the heavy, defined lines typical of the actor-print genre. The colour palette relies on deep blacks, muted blues, and distinct red accents, which serve to draw the eye to the figure's posture and the decorative elements of his costume.
As a leading designer of actor prints, Kunisada was prolific in capturing the theatricality of the kabuki stage. This print demonstrates his ability to integrate narrative elements from literature with the specific iconography of the theatre. The inclusion of cartouches containing the series title and the actor's name provides historical context, identifying the subject and the specific production. The work functions as a record of both the performance and the cultural fascination with the Water Margin stories during the mid-nineteenth century. The print is a clear example of the technical precision achieved by the carvers and printers working under Kunisada's direction, maintaining clarity in the fine lines of the tattoos and the solid blocks of colour.
