A classic yakusha-e woodblock print by Seiyōsai Shunshi, capturing the dramatic intensity of kabuki actor Onoe Fujaku III in a historical role.
This woodblock print by Seiyōsai Shunshi depicts the kabuki actor Onoe Fujaku III in the role of the historical figure Kobayakawa Takakage. The work belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which focuses on portraits of actors in their stage personas. Shunshi, a student of the Katsukawa school, employs the characteristic bold lines and expressive facial features associated with this tradition. The actor is shown in a close-up, or okubi-e, format, which allows for a focus on the dramatic makeup and the intensity of the performance.
The figure wears elaborate, patterned robes that suggest the status of a samurai commander. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of deep purple, yellow, and muted tones to define the costume. The background remains plain, ensuring the viewer concentrates on the actor's gaze and the calligraphic inscriptions that accompany the portrait. These inscriptions provide context regarding the actor's identity and the specific character portrayed. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the majority of the frame, creating a sense of presence typical of early nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the woodblock process, where each colour is applied via a separate block. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the contours of the face and the folds of the fabric. This print offers a glimpse into the theatrical culture of the Edo period, where actors were celebrities and their likenesses were highly sought after by the public. The work remains a clear example of the stylistic conventions of the Katsukawa school, which prioritised the accurate representation of an actor's individual features over idealised beauty.
