A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsho, capturing the kabuki actor Onoe Matsusuke I in a dramatic stage pose.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsho depicts the kabuki actor Onoe Matsusuke I in a dramatic, theatrical pose. Shunsho was a central figure in the Katsukawa school, known for his realistic portrayals of actors, a departure from the more stylised, idealised depictions common in earlier ukiyo-e prints. This specific genre, known as yakusha-e, focused on capturing the individual features and specific stage personas of performers active in the Edo period.
The actor is shown in a dynamic stance, wearing a costume adorned with patterns that suggest a warrior or historical character. The use of kumadori, the bold, stylised makeup applied to kabuki actors, is visible around the eyes, conveying the intensity of the character. The composition is structured by the architectural lines of the stage background, which provide a sense of depth while maintaining the graphic quality characteristic of the medium. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and muted greens, which allows the focus to remain on the actor's posture and facial expression.
Shunsho's work is noted for its attention to the specific physical traits of his subjects. By moving away from generic actor representations, he provided a more authentic record of the kabuki theatre of his time. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock carving process, where each line and colour block was carefully registered to create the final image. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of eighteenth-century Japan, where the theatre served as a primary source of entertainment and fashion for the urban population. The print remains a clear example of the Katsukawa school's contribution to the development of actor portraiture within the ukiyo-e tradition.
