A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I, capturing the theatrical presence of kabuki actor Takii Hannosuke.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I depicts the kabuki actor Takii Hannosuke in a role portraying an effeminate youth. As a founder of the Torii school, Kiyonobu I was instrumental in defining the visual language of early Ukiyo-e, particularly the genre of yakusha-e, or actor prints. These works functioned as promotional material for the kabuki theatres of Edo, capturing the likenesses and stage presence of popular performers.
The composition utilises the bold, sweeping lines characteristic of the Torii style. The figure is presented in a dynamic posture, with the voluminous robes creating a sense of movement. The print is an example of urushi-e, or lacquer print, where hand-applied pigments and occasionally metallic powders were used to add depth and texture to the ink lines. The colour palette is restricted to a classic combination of black, white, and a muted orange-red, which directs the viewer's attention to the calligraphic quality of the robes and the stylised features of the actor.
The robes are adorned with patterns and kanji characters, which were common in actor prints to identify the performer or the specific production. The figure holds a closed umbrella, a prop that adds to the theatricality of the pose. The lack of a background ensures the focus remains entirely on the actor, a hallmark of early actor portraiture that prioritised the performer's persona over environmental detail. This print provides a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the Genroku period, where the theatre culture of Edo exerted a strong influence on the visual arts. The work demonstrates the technical precision required in early woodblock printing, where the balance between negative space and bold ink work was essential for visual clarity.
