A 1732 woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu depicting actors Segawa Kikujiro I and Sanjo Kantaro II in a scene from the kabuki play Shochikubai Kongen Soga.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu depicts a scene from the kabuki play Shochikubai Kongen Soga, performed at the Ichimura Theater in Edo during the third month of 1732. The composition features two prominent actors of the era: Segawa Kikujiro I in the role of Oshichi and Sanjo Kantaro II as Kichisaburo. The work is an example of urushi-e, a style of hand-coloured print where lacquer or glue was applied to specific areas to create a glossy, black finish, often supplemented by yellow pigments.
The figures are rendered with the characteristic stylisation of early eighteenth-century ukiyo-e. The artist employs bold, calligraphic lines to define the contours of the actors' robes and their expressive facial features. The composition is relatively flat, prioritising the decorative arrangement of the figures and their elaborate costumes over spatial depth. A large floral arrangement sits to the right, providing a sense of setting while maintaining the two-dimensional aesthetic common to the period. The actors are positioned in a balanced, theatrical pose, reflecting the conventions of the kabuki stage where specific gestures and stances communicated character archetypes to the audience.
Nishimura Shigenobu, often associated with the Nishimura school, was active during a period when the ukiyo-e genre was transitioning from simple monochrome prints to more complex, multi-coloured formats. This print captures the ephemeral nature of the theatre, documenting a specific performance for the urban populace of Edo. The use of yellow and black creates a stark, graphic quality that draws attention to the patterns on the garments and the props held by the actors. The inclusion of the play title and the actors' names serves as a record of the cultural life of the time, providing insight into the celebrity culture surrounding kabuki performers in the early Edo period.
