A 1743 woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu II depicting actors Tamazawa Saijiro I and Ichimura Uzaemon VIII in a scene from the kabuki play Haru wa Akebono Kuruwa Soga.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu II depicts a scene from the kabuki play Haru wa Akebono Kuruwa Soga, performed at the Ichimura Theater in Edo during the first month of 1743. The composition features two actors, Tamazawa Saijiro I and Ichimura Uzaemon VIII, in their respective roles as Oiso no Tora and Soga no Juro. The Torii school was synonymous with the depiction of kabuki actors, and this work demonstrates the characteristic bold, sweeping lines that defined the style during the mid-eighteenth century.
The print employs a limited palette, typical of early hand-coloured or simple two-colour woodblock techniques. The figures are arranged with a focus on theatrical posture, capturing the stylised gestures of the kabuki stage. The background includes a plum tree and a stone water basin, elements that provide a sense of setting while maintaining the flat, graphic quality inherent to the medium. The robes worn by the actors are decorated with floral motifs, including chrysanthemums, which add a layer of visual texture to the composition.
As a yakusha-e, or actor print, this work served as a form of publicity for the theatre, allowing fans to collect images of their favourite performers. The calligraphy integrated into the upper right corner provides context regarding the play and the actors involved. The print reflects the aesthetic priorities of the Torii school, which favoured strong outlines and dramatic characterisation over realistic portraiture. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of Edo-period Japan, where the theatre and the print market were closely linked. The preservation of such works allows for an analysis of the evolving techniques in woodblock printing and the specific conventions of kabuki performance during the 1740s.
