A serene Renaissance tondo by Cosimo Rosselli, depicting the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and angels in adoration of the infant Christ.
This circular composition, or tondo, by the Florentine painter Cosimo Rosselli depicts the Adoration of the Christ Child. The scene centres on the infant Jesus, who lies upon the ground, surrounded by the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and two angels. The figures are arranged in a balanced, devotional manner typical of the late fifteenth-century Florentine tradition. Mary kneels with her hands clasped in prayer, her deep blue mantle contrasting with the warm, earthy tones of the surrounding terrain.
Rosselli, a contemporary of Botticelli and Ghirlandaio, employs a clear, linear style that defines the forms of the figures against a distant, atmospheric background. The inclusion of Saint John the Baptist as a child, holding a small cross, provides a narrative link to the future ministry of Christ. The architectural element, a single stone pillar supporting a thatched roof, frames the sacred event while allowing the eye to travel into the rolling hills depicted in the distance. The foreground is detailed with botanical observations, including small flowering plants that populate the meadow where the holy family rests.
Technically, the work demonstrates the use of tempera, which allows for the precise application of colour and the fine rendering of drapery folds. The light is even and clear, typical of the period, avoiding dramatic shadows in favour of a serene, contemplative atmosphere. The circular format was a popular choice for domestic devotional objects in Renaissance Florence, intended to encourage private reflection. Rosselli’s approach to the subject is grounded in the conventions of his time, focusing on the clarity of the narrative and the humanisation of the divine figures through their gentle expressions and naturalistic postures.
