A sixteenth-century hand-coloured woodcut depicting the Adoration of the Magi, framed by narrative medallions in a Gothic architectural style.
This hand-coloured woodcut, attributed to the sixteenth-century artist known as Monogrammist S, presents a complex narrative structure typical of Northern Renaissance printmaking. The central scene depicts the Adoration of the Magi, where the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child receive the three kings. The composition is framed by an elaborate architectural structure, reminiscent of Gothic stone carving, which serves to compartmentalise the narrative.
Surrounding the central tableau are eight circular medallions, each containing smaller scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin. These vignettes provide a theological context for the main event, linking the birth of Christ to broader biblical narratives. The use of hand-applied colour adds a layer of visual depth to the stark black lines of the woodblock, a common practice for prints intended for devotional use during this period. The figures are rendered with the characteristic angularity of early sixteenth-century Netherlandish art, with attention paid to the folds of drapery and the expressive gestures of the participants.
The architectural framework, with its pointed arches and decorative tracery, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the time, where printmakers often sought to emulate the grandeur of ecclesiastical architecture within the confines of a single sheet. The work functions as a visual sermon, guiding the viewer through a sequence of events while maintaining a focus on the central mystery of the Incarnation. The precision of the line work suggests a high degree of technical skill, typical of the workshops operating in the Low Countries during the transition from the late Gothic to the Renaissance period. This print offers a glimpse into the devotional practices of the era, where such images were collected and studied for their theological and aesthetic content.
