The left wing shows the Nativity, where the Holy Family is situated within a ruined architectural setting. This inclusion of classical ruins was a frequent device in Northern European painting, intended to symbolise the decline of the old order in the face of the new Christian era. The right wing depicts the Presentation in the Temple, where the figures are arranged around a central altar. The Master of 1518 is identified by a monogram found on a work dated to that year, though the identity of the individual remains unknown. This triptych displays the characteristic mannerist tendencies of the Antwerp school, including elongated figures and a preference for decorative, busy surfaces. The palette is balanced, utilising deep reds, blues, and ochres that were standard for the period. The work functions as a devotional object, designed to be opened and closed, with the narrative progression from the birth of Christ to his recognition by the Magi and his presentation in the temple.
