A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds with classical architectural elements.
Giulio Bonasone, a Bolognese painter and engraver, produced this work during the mid-sixteenth century. The composition depicts the Nativity, with the infant Christ positioned at the centre, radiating light that illuminates the surrounding figures. The Virgin Mary kneels beside the child, while shepherds approach from the right, their postures conveying reverence and curiosity. Above, a group of angels occupies the upper left, their forms emerging from clouds. The architectural setting, featuring classical columns and masonry, provides a structured backdrop to the scene.
Bonasone demonstrates technical proficiency in his use of line and cross-hatching to define form and shadow. The engraving technique allows for a range of tonal values, from the bright highlights surrounding the child to the deeper shadows within the ruined structure. The figures exhibit the muscularity and fluid movement characteristic of the Mannerist style, which influenced many artists in Italy during this period. The artist often worked from his own designs, as indicated by the inscription on the lower edge of the print. This work reflects the conventions of sixteenth-century printmaking, where biblical narratives were translated into accessible visual formats for a wider audience. The balance between the human figures and the architectural elements creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the narrative space. The print remains a representative example of the graphic output of the period, showing the intersection of classical influence and religious subject matter.
