A detailed woodcut by Albrecht Dürer depicting the meeting of Emperor Maximilian I and King Henry VII of England, created for the Triumphal Arch project.
This woodcut depicts a meeting between two of the most powerful monarchs of the early sixteenth century: Emperor Maximilian I and King Henry VII of England. The work belongs to the broader project of the Triumphal Arch, a massive print commission initiated by Maximilian I to document his genealogy and political achievements. Dürer, working alongside other artists in the imperial circle, produced this scene to commemorate the diplomatic ties between the Holy Roman Empire and the English crown.
The composition is dense with military detail. In the foreground, the two monarchs are shown on horseback, meeting in a formal gesture of alliance. They are surrounded by an array of soldiers, lances, and banners, which convey the scale of their respective armies. Dürer employs his characteristic precision in the rendering of the plate armour, the caparisons of the horses, and the varied textures of the soldiers' attire. The background features a fortified town, rendered with the atmospheric perspective common to Dürer's graphic work, providing a sense of depth behind the crowded foreground.
Technically, the print demonstrates the mastery of the woodcut medium that Dürer brought to the Northern Renaissance. The lines are controlled and deliberate, allowing for the representation of complex forms within a relatively small space. The work functions as both a historical record and a piece of political propaganda, intended to project the strength and legitimacy of the Habsburg-Tudor connection. The inclusion of heraldic symbols and the specific arrangement of the figures reflect the rigid social and political hierarchies of the period. This print remains a primary example of how the medium of the woodcut was utilised to disseminate political narratives across Europe during the early modern era.
